Grit and density solve different selection questions
A nylon polishing wheel combines a non-woven fiber structure with abrasive mineral and resin. Grit influences the abrasive action, while density affects how firm the wheel feels and how closely it follows the workpiece. These values should be selected together with wheel size, operating conditions and the required finish.
Two wheels described with the same grit can perform differently when their density, abrasive mineral, construction or machine speed changes. For purchasing decisions, compare the complete specification rather than relying on color or grit alone.
Choose grit from the starting surface and target finish
A coarser grade is generally considered when stronger cutting or correction is required. Finer grades are used when the objective moves toward blending, refinement or a more consistent visual finish. The appropriate step depends on the base material, existing scratches, previous process and acceptable dimensional change.
- Identify the workpiece material and current surface condition.
- Define whether the task is cleaning, blending, line finishing or final refinement.

Use density to control firmness and conformity
Lower and higher density references indicate different wheel firmness within a supplier's product system. A firmer construction may hold its shape more strongly, while a more conformable construction can follow contours and distribute contact differently. Density labels are not always directly interchangeable between suppliers.
The current custom nylon polishing wheel reference includes 3P to 12P density and 40# to 1000# grit options. Final combinations must be confirmed for the selected diameter, thickness, bore and abrasive mineral.
Confirm dimensions and machine compatibility
Diameter affects surface speed and machine clearance. Thickness affects contact width, while the bore must match the spindle or mounting system. Confirm the machine, guard, permitted wheel diameter and operating speed before approving a specification.

Validate the specification before a volume order
For a new application or supplier comparison, use a controlled sample with the actual workpiece and machine. Record the approved wheel dimensions, mineral, grit, density, speed, pressure and resulting finish. This creates a clearer reference for repeat orders and quality checks.
