Start with the result you need
Flap discs, non-woven wheels and wire brushes can all be used on metal, but they do different work. The right choice depends on whether the job requires material removal, surface refinement or cleaning without significantly changing the base metal.
Before choosing a product, identify the workpiece material, the condition of the surface, the required finish, the compatible machine and its operating speed.
Flap discs: grinding and blending
Flap discs use overlapping abrasive-cloth flaps. They are suitable when the process needs measurable cutting action, such as weld blending, edge refinement, scale removal or preparation before finishing.
- Choose a coarser grit for faster stock removal.
- Choose a finer grit when the next step requires a smoother transition.
- Confirm disc diameter, bore or thread, abrasive grain and maximum RPM for the machine.
- For stainless steel or heat-sensitive work, control pressure and dwell time to reduce discoloration.
Non-woven wheels: controlled finishing
Non-woven abrasives combine nylon fiber, abrasive grain and resin in an open web. The conformable structure is useful for blending, satin finishing, light deburring and surface preparation while helping preserve the workpiece profile.
Density, abrasive grade, mineral, wheel construction and operating speed all affect the result. Interleaf wheels combine abrasive cloth and non-woven material when a stronger cut and a more uniform finish are required in one operation.
- Use for decorative line finishing, controlled blending and light oxidation removal.
- Select diameter, thickness, bore, density and grade together.
- Test on a sample when appearance consistency is important.
- Do not assume color alone defines the grade; confirm the supplier specification.
Wire brushes: cleaning and surface preparation
Wire brushes remove rust, loose scale, paint residue and surface contamination through the action of steel or brass-coated wire. They clean the surface rather than producing the same abrasive finish as a flap disc or non-woven wheel.
Crimped wire is generally more flexible for lighter cleaning. Twist-knot wire provides more aggressive action for demanding preparation work. Wire material, diameter, trim length and construction must suit the workpiece and machine.
